Well if you have to find it via Nextag, that ought to be a HUGE red flag:

I bought a Panasonic ZS3 and few accessories from abesofmaine.com and they were great and no problems so far.

A great place I stumbled upon for some gear such as Tripod accessories, rain covers, lenscoats, canera bags and the likes. They have good pricing, free shiping and if you get on their mailing list they have nice coupon codes that come out that you can actually use instead of the ones like other places that are limited usually to what you just bought or dont need.

    The Digital Hunter
Hello! A friend of mine just found this website, "The Digital Hunter" and I can't seem to find anything on them when I google them, so was wondering if any of you have heard of them or purchased from them? Here is their link: Thank you!

If you check through Whois.com you'll find that they use Domainsbyproxy.com to keep their ownership a secret. Not a good sign for a retailer.

I would probably avoid them for now.

They don't have any feedback at resellerratings.com. Stay away unless you're rich and feel like getting scammed.

Hi all, I see this thread hasn't been active in a while, so I thought I'd add my 2 cents.

Buying camera gear online is a potentially risky business unless you know who you're dealing with. There are an endless number of fly-by-night operations that will rip you off... :cry See this incredibly useful thread: http://dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=374 about how not to get ripped off.

Before you buy anything from anyone, go to http://www.resellerratings.com/ and check them out. Also, once you're familiar with the "good stores" vs the "run away!" stores, it's never a bad idea to use one of the price check sites like http://www.nextag.com/ or http://www.pricewatch.com/ to quickly find out if someone's got a good offer.

My trusted stores (in common with a lot of other folks):

B&H and Adorama are neck & neck at the front of the pack. Service, selection and reliability / peace of mind are unbeatable. Their prices are usually within a dollar or two of each other. Occasionally bigger price differences, in/out of stock considerations, and slight differences in product line (for accessories etc.) are the only things that determine which of the two I order from. They both rock.

Cameta Camera is another trusty. I've ordered large and small ticket items from them, with never a hint of a problem. Their service is great, although their selection is nowhere near as big as B&H and Adorama. Prices can be higher or lower, depending on sales / timing. They have an Amazon Marketplace outlet (actually, so does Adorama) which may have slightly lower pricing.

17th Street Photo is another reputable store, although their selection is more limited compared to the big boys. They occasionally have deals or in-stock items that would get my business.

Helix Camera in Chicago used to be my local camera store, and their service is very good. I've even ordered from them over the phone, and I'm now on the West Coast. Prices are a bit higher, and selection isn't as great, but if they have something in stock, I trust them.

For lenses, I've had good experiences with Sigma4Less. I try to steer clear of 3rd party lenses, but on occasion it's been a necessity and these guys have impressed me with their service and prices.

If you're in the San Diego area, Nelson Photo is worth checking out. They're a local store, good / helpful service, but smaller selection and higher prices.

    Other places:

Calumet is a mixed bag, as far as what you may experience. I have a good working relationship with the folks in my local store (which is right up the street, literally) so I've had no problems personally. But I know that's not been everyone's experience. I've bought big ticket items (camera, lenses) but I mostly spend my "last minute" dollars there, on accessories / supplies or such. Their prices can be significantly higher than B&H and Adorama, so watch out.

Ritz Camera is not somewhere I would recommend. The kids who work there tend not to know anything and their prices are ridiculous most of the time.

    Bottom Line:

If you see prices online that seem too good to be true - they almost certainly are. You might get lucky, but you're taking a big chance. Research the store before you place an order, and remember the golden rule (modern version of Caveat Emptor): If in doubt, get the heck out! :help
