Well, I'm not exactly new, but I thought since it's been so lonce since I've been here I would re-introduce myself.
My name is Jeff, I live in West Virginia, I shoot with a Canon 20D and I wish I could do it full time. I also just recently joined smugmug and I am very glad I did! Now if I can just remember to upload more pics.
But ME? I have nothing artistic of me aside from some seaside scans (major white imbalance at work there, sigh) from my freshman year in college. Which would have been ... ah ... a while ago. a decade or more, ok?
BUT I'll be at the shootout (massive group as we'll be) and if you remember me, come and say hello and I promise to immediately forget your name (I'm HORRIBLE with that) and remember who you are.
The best photo of me I have to date is one Steph too of my ass, but you can't see my face, so ... you are dropped into the land of camera photos. I sincerely apologize in advance.
most others involve me and horses, which again does nothing since the hair+helmet+barn clothes does nothing at all: http://catspaw.smugmug.com/photos/309809172_L7mvS-M.jpg (fear not, I bought the photo, copy right excluded)
So the best I have right now is from a LAZZZZZZY hot day the last week where everyone was victim to the heat as well as nap photos. Here's mine:

I had a little point and shoot for years, and when I finally realized I was trying to make it do more than it could I bought a D60 back in April.
I have high hopes for what I take away from this site. I love taking pictures, and take a ton of them. My theory with digital cameras is take a ton of pictures and keep the few I like. I've never done a thing with any sort of "post processing". Maybe I'll learn how to do that. I'm also hoping to learn about composition and making the most of my camera.
Oh, and I'll have to work on the self-portrait. There's a reason I stand behind the camera.

I posted some lizard pictures in the Wildlife section so I thought I should come over here and introduce myself.
I started shooting 35mm film about 25 years ago at work in order to document various engineering "issues" with our product (cars). I even got the company to pay for three semesters of B&W photo classes at the local community college back then. Amongst the old "retired" company photo stuff I found a 4x5 view camera so I got the boss to pay for a 4x5 class too. The 4x5 was great fun but too much work and expense.
When the first digitals came along (the old Logitech FotoMan) I saw the potential for application in my work and that digital for many reasons would replace film in our working envirnoment. Once again got the company to spring for a camera goodies.
At work we stuck with film through about 1999 but I made the switch to digital full time when the first Kodak DCS 1mp cameras came out. Most of my work is out of doors shooting vehicle parts and test situations and it's a very "flat" sort of photography. No art allowed, just good, clear pictures with lots of detail. Occasionally some macro stuff of itty bitty cracks or deformations. Still, one learns a good bit about the basic rules of making pictures and working cameras no matter the de-emphasis of the creative side.
I began shooting all digital in the late '90s with the Nikon Coolpix 900 and then worked my way through the 990, 995, 4500, and the 8800. Working outside in the AZ heat, shooting quickly, shooting several thousand photos a year plus my own personal shooting on the side, the cameras were only good for 2 - 3 years before they were beat up and technologically out of date. I'm still shooting the Nikon 8800 at work and have an 8700 of my own but just bought myself a new D90 kit a couple of weeks ago. I retire in a few months and as the company has some rules about actually KEEPING the company photo equipment (vs just borrowing it) I decided to treat myself to a new camera outfit as a retirement present.
Most of my personal shooting is tied to my motorcycle wanderings with no particular subject in mind. If it looks interesting, whether it's a person, scene, critter, or building, I'll take a shot at it. I'm still learning to see the photo possibilities vs documenting an object.
So here I am after 25 years of shooting pictures ready to continue learning and hopefully improving my knowledge and photographic skills. The bike is my new moto toy. Sold the big Honda Gold Wing so I could wander at a slower pace, see more, get off the pavement a bit, and have some fun.

There are lots of interesting things to photograph in Panama, I like to explore the trials and help my wife on her social work projects.
My home has become a refuge for unwanted pets, the parrot in the photo was given to me when the original owners were tired of keeping him.
Sorry about the quality, but it is the only self photo I have.

AdvRider is a great site with some truly amazing stories. I've been knocking around there for a couple of years or so but don't post much except on some threads related to vintage bikes. My beat up old body won't do long rides anymore so I'm shifting my focus (pun intended) to emphasize the photography portion of my hobby interests.
Dgrin shows it's SmugMug/Adventure Rider roots in a lot of ways including the friendly and helpful attitude of the users. A really great site is only going to be as good as it's users and the folks behined the three sites have clearly figured out how to run things well and how set a good tone for atmosphere and feeling of the forums.

Hello Doug, Just noticed your Username, I used to ride Yamaha's back in the early 70's, MX, Enduros, Hare Scrambles, AMA District 11 Southern Ohio. That is a nice bike in your photo, know what you mean about the beat up body. If you decide to get in a hurry again, I have a 1979 Husky 390XC sitting in my sister's garage in Ohio.
I am new to photography and the fourm, hoping to move beyond snapshots.

Happy Trails,
Lots of guys collecting old Huskys now and restoring or racing them. I have a friend that sold his well thrashed '70s vintage 390 for nearly $2000. Your's would be an easy sell in that area if it's at all restorable.
Love the parrot in your photo, by the way. Looks like a young one (the parrot, not you). My best buddy for a long time was a Mexican Double Yellowhead parrot named Fenwick. I think birds are God's little experiment in over-saturating colors. Fenwick's been gone over twenty years now and I still miss the little terrorist clown.

Hello again,
I was kidding about the Husky, but if they are going for that kind of money I may have to investigte. The bike is like new, spent it's life sitting in garages. I will look for a printed photo.
As for the parrot, he was about a year old in the photo. He is 8 years old now and lives in the mango tree in the back yard. He is a Amazon Green parrot. Parrots are good pets, but they demand a lot of attention and they live a long time. The female in the photo is 11 years old, she sings, laughs and talks and likes to ride in the truck. She gets me in trouble when I take her to town and she makes comments to passing ladies! The male is more laid back. Both can fly, but I guess they hang around for the free lunch.
Hi. My name is Nancy. Here I am in Greece with my old Power Shot - may that old workhorse rest in peace. Now I'm armed with a Panasonic Lumix FX35. DH has a Canon D40. Mostly he snaps the pitures and I PhotoShop them. I'm in the process of learning PhotoShop and the DGrin forum is a great resource! I live outside of Amsterdam.

Hi, my name is Margaret. I live in the Chicagoland area. Yes, I did take this photo by myself without using the timer. I held it in front of me and snapped a picture hoping it would turn out and to my surprise it did. It still amazes me what a Canon PowerShot SD850 IS Digital Elph can do. It has given me many "Moments In Time"...
New to the forum and fairly new to photography. I live in Porter Ranch which is in the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of Los Angeles.
I've always had an affinity for shooting but it's just over the past 6 months that I've really taken the time to learn the fundamentals and buy my first serious camera. It's quickly becoming a passion of mine and Dgrin as really helped me to improve my shooting and post processing.
Thanks to all for sharing your expertise and your pictures. Noobs like me really appreciate it.
OH... Here is the most recent picture of me standing next to a beautiful Cadilac at the Peterson Car Museum here in Los Angeles. Hope it's cool that I used a photo taken by someone else.
Hi folks, my first post Me? Blimey, well, ……. ex-pat Scot (east coast, near Edinburgh) now living in deepest darkest Somerset, south west UK. Started out in this here photography malarkey with a Zenith EM back in ’75 (yes, I am that old) then spent many years with 35mm Minolta gear shooting (mostly) B&W and nearly choking to death in an unventilated wet darkroom housed in a blacked out bathroom (great water supply, dodgy electrics) ..….. A bit of a hiatus during the ‘90s (job & family thing, it’s a common story) then was swept along in the digital Tsunami when, in 2002, I traded all my 35mm gear for a Nikon Coolpix 5700, then promptly spent 9 moths wishing it was a DSLR. I now use Canon gear (a ‘long in the tooth' 20D at the mo) and various lenses (primes & zooms). I'm a Canon man simply due to an accident of timing, when the 10D became the first DSLR within reach of the am-tog. I suppose I’d describe myself as a keen enthusiast for many years, with a day job to pay the bills and an occasion togging commission to keep it interesting. I don’t specialise in any particular area so ‘general photography’ would be the word but I suppose I take more landscapes than anything. Lately I’ve been getting into band & gig photography …. mostly because I’m a aging rocker at heart I’ve played around with my own web site for a couple of years but decided that life’s just way toooo short to waste time on that so here I am, adopting Smugmug as my web home and dgrin as my font of all knowledge Afraid I haven’t got a shot of my mug but have included one from earlier this year sneakily taken by the current Mrs daveb on her little Sony silver-box-slim line-compact-thingy. We were in NW Wales and I was photographing HarlechCastle, catching the evening light, before retiring to the pub for a pint or three Cheers, Dave B.
