I'm so glad I found this thread buried here. I've been hoping for a thread like this.Photographing Sting at one of the many concerts I've attended is what got me interested in photography. Up until July, I've had nothing but P&S cameras. I took my brand spankin' new D40x with my 70-300 VR zoom into the ACC in Toronto in July for both Police concerts, got away with it the 1st night but got nipped the 2nd night and had to put it away.
I'm not thrilled with the performance in low light with the D40x and had been considering selling it and hunting down a D50 or D70s instead. Any opinions about that would be gratefully appreciated.
Here are a few of my novice attempts....

If you want to see some (actually a lot of) excellent heavy metal concert photos, take a look on this site: http://www.photopit.com

Its the site of a freind of mine. She regulary sells her photos to magazines and gets published a lot. Her portfolio is unbelievable! :wow

    Andreas

Holy *&** those are great photos. What does she use, do you know?

It is somewhat of a weird hobby, I guess. It also has many negative overtones attached to it with bootlegging and ebay, but some folks just do it for the love of music. Just like photos, that recording captures a memory. Its nice to be able to listen to the memory again.

Many bands actually allow live audio taping. The band last night did and the recording sounds great. I just wish I had some pictures to go along with it.

Photography and taping actually have a lot of similarities.

A regular contributor on Dime are you? Always for trade, never for sale. There's a big difference between those like us who just love the music and those who record to sell. John Mayer is very bootleg friendly. His crew have been known to help tapers set up via soundboard. If the concerts were officially released, we'd buy 'em.

I just saw some photos of Pearl Jam while making my way through this great thread. Here is a slightly out of focus photo of Eddie Vedder. Imagine my surprise to turn around at the Police's fan club gig to find Mr. Vedder sitting right behind me. He was gracious enough to let me snap this. Too bad I inadvertently focused on his fingers holding a guitar pick instead of his famous eyes. headscratch.gif

    Wow, awesome thread
I just found this thread. I'm really enjoying it. I thought I would post a link up to my most recent work at the 2007 Soldier Show over here in Korea. It is a group of Soldiers that travel around the world entertaining Service men and women that are deployed. They came over here and put on a great show. I would love your C & C. They were taken with a Canon 30D and 70-200 f/2.8 L.

    Thanks for looking.

What a cool thread! There are so many great photos here! I recently photographed an outdoor benefit concert. The music was awesome and I took a little over 200 shots. I was happy with close to 90, but I wanted to share some of them...

Some amazing photos in here. I happened upon this thread while searching for camera to shoot maily nightime or dark places for musicians.

Here are a couple I shot of my friend Toby with my Sony DSC H2. I'm still searching for the perfect SLR. Soon....

I turned up the ISO on this next one cause he wanted some "grainy" shots for his site.

I also caught Bon Jovi when they were in town. I made the wrong lens choice and took my 18-135mm zoom. Wished I'd taken the 85mm 1.8. Live and learn. Here one of only and handful that weren't a total write off

I'm very in favor of a new forum for this subject matter and wonder why it still doesn't exist!? What is needed to get it set up? What can we do? I would make it a little more general - "Entertainment". How bout that? That should tickle the creative impulses hugely while ensuring that the forum has a distinct and clearly delineated identity. Let's go!
